Hey Mama!
Do you feel like you are doing something wrong because your toddler is still having tantrums?
With my first, I went down the rabbit hole of punishments… corrections… whatever you want to call it… in order to get the behavior to stop.
I was so focused on the tantrum itself… the bad behavior.. that I never stopped to think about the WHY behind it.
Last week, I shared the REAL reason your toddler is having so many tantrums (you can watch it below):
I have struggled with realistic expectations for my kids.
More often than not, I am expecting them to behave WAY beyond their age.
And truthfully, most moms in my practice struggle with knowing what’s appropriate behavior for their child’s age. I think this is because:
- Our parents generation believed in kids should be seen not heard.
- Social Media shows only the Highlights of a Child
- We haven’t been modeled what a “normal” childhood should look like.
Even the most well-meaning parents, haven’t necessarily modeled what normal childhood development looks like.
So us modern moms are parenting from a place of expectation vs trusting our intuition.
I know what you are thinking, but WHAT IS age appropriate? How do I know?
This has been a huge hurdle for me because there isn’t a manual that lays it out in a pretty table for me to check.
This is when I began diving into the Nervous System (and its development) along with brain science.
The book the Whole Brain Child (check it out here) is a great one if you want to gain some knowledge about this too.

But after doing this work, I’m more interested in being attuned to my intuition.
I want to trust that I will know when something isn’t developmentally appropriate.
This has happened through a process of reconnecting to myself, having mindsight with my children, and letting go of what society tells me is “normal.”
Of course this approach takes a lot of self-responsibility and inner work, but it feels absolutely worth it to me!
Hope you have a good rest of your week!
